HAJJ WITH MY SHAYKH

Introduction

On the morning of the 17th of May 2007 a group of 43 pilgrims set off for Turkey from Manchester International Airport under the leadership and guidance of 'The Crown Of The Ahl-e-Sunnat' Raees al Muhaqiqeen Hadrat Shaykh al Islam w'al Muslimeen Allama Peer Sayyid M Madani Ashrafi w'al Jilani.

Hadrat Shaykh al Islam were accompanied by their most sincere and ever reliable nephew Hadrat Peer Sayyid Arbi Mian Ashrafi w'al Jilani and one other prominent member of the Ashrafi household, the grandson of Hadrat Sarkar-e-Kalan Rahmatullahi Alayh, Janab 'Ahsan al Ulema' Hadrat Allama Peer Sayyid M Ahsan Mian Ashrafi w'al Jilani. Khalifa-e-Shaykh al Islam The Respected Shafeeq Ashrafi Sahib from Birmingham was also part of this entourage.

As well as the aforementioned and most eminent 'Sadaat-e-Kichowcha', this spiritual group of 40 plus represented London, Leicester, Birmingham, Halifax, Dewsbury, Bolton, Blackburn and Preston. However the biggest irony of all were the heart rendering words of our Master, The Most Beloved Messenger of Allah infinite peace and blessings be upon him....

'When there is a 'jama'ah' group of 40 or above,
there is one amongst them who is most dear to The Almighty'.

Subhanallah! Not that the words of The Noble Messenger salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam cleared any doubts but it was an added feeling of comfort and assurance that this surely was destined to be a highly momentous and a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the mausoleums and tombs of some of The Greatest Personalities in Islamic History behind the footsteps of arguably the greatest present day Shaykh, Sufi and Scholar.

The First Spiritual Moment

As the group from various parts of the country trickled into the Airport and checked-in they finally amassed onto the boarding lounge and got to meet and see each other, some for the very first time. Hadrat Shaykh al Islam w'al Muslimeen were already sat with some of the prominent members of the group towards one enclosure of the lounge. As more and more members of the group noticed their presence they joined and sat in the same vicinity of the lounge. It was at this point many felt the spiritual force of Shaykh al Islam for the first time. Young members of the group seen sat opposite this highly devout personality with their heads bowed in respect and honour was a defining moment of what was to be expected in the forthcoming journey as a feeling of peace and silence was felt in and around one of the most busiest and hectic Airports in the United Kingdom.

Istanbul

Touchdown in Istanbul

Naturally during the flight the entire contingent was seated behind Hadrat Shaykh al Islam hence Hadrat were amongst the first to descend on to Istanbul International Airport. As the rest of the party hastily followed suit and collected their luggage it was realised that Hadrat had asked members to enquire about the direction of the 'Qibla' inorder to perform the Zuhr salah. Hadrat were led to a Masjid situated in the upper floor of the airport. Within a short space of time the vast majority of the group had followed Hadrat to perform the salah however four unfortunate individuals were still waiting to collect their luggage which in time was realised as missing.

After quite an extensive delay the four members of the group minus their luggage joined the rest of the party on board the coach patiently waiting to depart for the Hotel. Hadrat Shaykh al Islam w'al Muslimeen the spiritual commander and leader of the tour was as always sat at the front seat. An unexplainable silence engulfed the interior of the coach, while some members seemed to be deep in thought as the reality of the imminent expedition must have truly hit home. All eyes were obediently observing through the large glass windows the impact of the western culture upon this once great nation of Sultans and Shaykhs. However the most eloquent and elevating minarets making up the Turkish skyline was a constant reminder of the roots and rich history of this great Ottoman City. After almost half an hour of drive through the roads of Istanbul the coach finally arrived at the destined Hotel.

Once everyone from the group were allocated a room, 'Asar Salah was an impending priority for all. Upon entrance to their room Hadrat Shaykh al Islam again enquired about the direction of Ka'aba. Their room was located on the first floor and shared with their nephew Sayyid Arbi Mian and Allama Sayyid Ahsan Mian. Alhamdolillah! ... there was a beautiful Masjid just a few yards down a side street opposite the Hotel which was very handy, infact many members of the group felt the peace inside the Masjid and often prayed salah there but unfortunately the Imam was clean shaven. After Salah the time was basically occupied as one would expect, unpacking and getting used to the surrounds but the option of enjoying the close company of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam was unfortunately eliminated from the agenda due to the limited space in the hotel room and the fact that Hadrat were presently under going a lenghty prayer session 'wird and wazaif' after the Maghrib Salah. After a long day the rest of the evening was spent retiring for the day.

Sahaba

Reward of Following The Shaykh : leads to the Sahaba e Kiraam

The next morning everyone was asked to gather in the Hotel foyer inorder to commence the purpose of the visit. As the group recollected eager to be led by Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam there was an air of eagerness and excitement felt all around. As soon as Hadrat appeared from the Hotel lifts everyone instantaneously stood up in respect to welcome their arrival. Hadrat made a quick glance at the group and then lead them out onto the streets of Istanbul.

At times there was frantic movement amongst the group scurrying to get close to The Shaykh, whilst many others had their digital cameras and mobile phones set eager to take snapshots of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam from every possible angle. Walking behind Hadrat Shaykh al Islam gave everyone an amazing sense of feeling that was not possible to put into words. Everyone felt a level of attachement and importance to be in the same company as this incredibly devout and much sought-after Scholar who was the focus of attention from the entire Turkish community where ever they went.

The words 'Mashallah' and 'marhaba, marhaba', were constantly heard as the group of 40 plus led by The Spiritual Heir of Muhaddith al-'Azam Rahmatullahi alayh walked the streets and side roads on approach to the Blessed and varacious Shrine of Hadrat Sayyidina Abu 'Ayub al Ansari Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu. The Great Sahabi-e-Rasool particularly renowned since after the Hijrah 'migration' they became the envy of all the fellow Companions and Ansars as their blessed home became the first stop and temporary lodgement of The Noble Messenger Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam. Hence it is more than ironic that Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala the All Knowing and Most Wise has made the Blessed Shrine of Hadrat Abu 'Ayub al Ansari also the first stop for 'ziyarah' for many of the Pilgrims visiting Istanbul. Infact amongst the locals the most prominent name amidst the Sahabah resting in Istanbul is that of Hadrat Sayyidina Abu 'Ayub Al Ansari Radi Allahu Ta 'ala anhu and this humble and unworthy group had the honour to be led to their abode behind the distinguished descendant of The Noble Prophet who is the envy of all the present day Ulema, Sufiya and Mashaykh alike.

Upon entrance to the exalted mausoleum the entire group was gathered around Hadrat bowed to the Sahabi-e-Rasool Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu. As the verses of the Qur'an were recited by one member of the group other pilgrims, visitors and children also gathered around awaiting Hadrat's closing du'a [supplication]. The atmosphere was breathtaking, an air of pure peace and benevolence was felt in the hearts. However when certain members truly focused on the situation in their minds, thus presenting themselves both mentally as well as physically by pouring their hearts to The Noble Companion of Allah's Most Beloved Messenger through the 'waseela' of their Peer-o-Murshid, the hearts burst open and uncontrollable tears flowed down the cheeks. However the most blissful and awe aspiring moment was when Hadrat Shaykh al Islam w'al Muslimeen raised their hands and beseeched The Almighty Lord by the feet of The Sahabi-e-Rasool. This was the essence and the pinnacle of the tour thus far. This was the very reason why so many Muslims ranging from the youth to the very old aspired and yearned to be part of this spiritual journey to benefit with the presence of one Shaykh al Islam while attending the Tombs of some of the Great Companions and Awliya-Allah. After the supplication of 'Fatiha' and Hadrats lengthy du'a, 'salat-o-salaam' was collectively recited out aloud.

Abu Ayub al Ansari

The Blessed Tomb of Hadrat Abu Ayub al Ansari

The words 'Mashallah' and 'marhaba, marhaba', were constantly heard as the group of 40 plus led by The Spiritual Heir of Muhaddith al 'Azam Rahmatullahi alay walked the streets and side roads on approach to the Blessed and varacious Shrine of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu 'Ayub al Ansari Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu. The Great Sahabi-e-Rasool particularly renowned since after the Hijrah ['migration'] they became the envy of all the fellow Companions and Ansars as their blessed home was the first stop and temporary lodgement of The Noble Messenger Sallallaho alayhi wa Sallam. Hence it is more than ironic that Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala the All Knowing and Most Wise has made the Blessed Shrine of Hadrat Abu 'Ayub al Ansari also the first stop for 'ziyarah' for many of the Pilgrims visiting Istanbul, thus preserving the Sunnah of His Beloved Messenger Sallalahu Alayhi wa Sallam. Infact amongst the locals the most prominent name amidst the Sahabah e Kiraam resting in Istanbul is that of Hadrat Sayyidena Abu 'Ayub Al Ansari Radi Allahu Ta 'ala anhu and this humble and unworthy group had the honour to be led to their blessed abode behind the distinguished descendant of The Noble Prophet who is the envy of all the present day Ulema, Sufiya and Mashaykh alike.

Upon entrance to the exalted mausoleum the entire group was gathered around Hadrat bowed to the Sahabi-e-Rasool Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu. As the verses from the Qur'an were recited by one member of the group, other pilgrims, visitors and children also gathered around awaiting Hadrat's closing du'a ['supplication']. The atmosphere was breathtaking, an air of pure peace and benevolence was felt in the hearts. However when certain members truly focused, thus presenting themselves both mentally as well as physically by pouring their hearts to The Noble Companion of Allah's Most Beloved Messenger through the 'waseela' of their Peer-o-Murshid, the hearts burst open and uncontrollable tears flowed down the cheeks. But the most blissful and awe aspiring moment was when Hadrat Shaykh al Islam w'al Muslimeen raised their hands and beseeched The Almighty Lord by the feet of The Sahabi-e-Rasool. This was the essence and the pinnacle of the tour thus far. This was the very reason why so many Muslims ranging from the youth to the very old aspired and yearned to be part of this spiritual journey to benefit with the presence of one Shaykh al Islam while attending the Tombs of some of the Great Companions and Awliya Allah. After the supplication of 'Fatiha' and Hadrats lengthy du'a, 'salat-o-salaam' was collectively recited out aloud.

Reciting Salaam aloud was probably not something the local people were used to or expected. Having said that it was not anything new for them neither as they seemed more than happy, contented and relaxed by joining in with some of the words which are very familiar amongst the Turkish spiritual gatherings....

Ya Nabi Salaam alayka, Ya Rasool Salaam alayka

Ya Habeeb Salaam alayka, Salawa tullah alaykah...

Peace and serenity engulfed the entire area whilst the gathering continued to passionately chant Salaam upon Allah's Beloved Messenger Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam. Emotion got the better of certain members of the group as again the focus of the mind and soul would reflect on the company of Hadrat while attending the tomb of The Great Sahabi e Rasool. The very thought of reciting Darood and Salaam upon The Noble Messenger in the presence of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam is an honour and a half but to recite the same with the Shaykh in the Blessed presence of a Sahabi-e-Rasool was something many would certainly savour for the rest of their lives. After a final du'a the 'khadim' of the Blessed Shrine of Hadrat Abu Ayub al Ansari opened the gate and invited Hadrat inside the enclosure of the varacious Chamber to the exalted Tomb. Rather than leading Hadrat inside he prefered to follow Hadrat in. The whole group was dumbfounded and never expected to witness such an awesome and monumental moment. The entire occupants inside the Mausuleom had their eyes firmly placed on Shaykh al Islam while Hadrat humbly stood by the exalted Tomb enjoying the moment of pure bliss and benevolence. During the time Hadrat spent inside the Chamber of bliss a blanket of calmness and composure was cast over the hearts and minds of all those present. A short while later Hadrat respectfully signalled permission and a parting farewell to The Noble Companion Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu before modestly departing in an almost crouched position slowly moving backwards to the normal standing area. The group slowly retreated while clinging close-by and gathered around Hadrat wanting to benefit from the Mercy and Blessings around them. Members of the tour witnessed the Khadim of the blessed Tomb embrace Hadrat quite emphatically and attempted to kiss their hands but Hadrat quickly managed to withdraw them away from him while quietly uttering the words 'Astaghfirallah'! Members of the group witnessed more locals lining up outside the Mausoleom waiting to greet and kiss the hands of Shaykh al Islam. Hadrat could not halt the recognition and honour they desperately sought to avoid such was the magnimity of 'noor' manifest on their face and character.

The fact that Shaykh al Islam were chosen and invited inside thus showered with the blessings of The Noble Companion was not really that suprising due to their status, piety and purety but for the group the thought of enjoying 'nisbah' and affiliation with this awesome Shaykh was now made to be even more breathtaking for the remaining days of 'ziyarah'.

Love Of Thy Murshid

Lost In The Love Of Thy Murshid

After the breathtaking visit to the tomb of Hadrat Abu Ayub al Ansari Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu the entire group members were still feeling dazed and unable to comprehend the spiritual impact of The Noble Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's beloved Companion. This was the topic as we  gathered to one side of the road awaiting the arrival of the coach, inorder to resume the spiritual tour of Istanbul.

Due to the prolonged wait it seemed as though there was some sort of a misunderstanding between the tour guide and the coach driver over the pick up point. During this time some members of the tour used the opportunity to take more digital photo shoots of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam, while one or two others started to browse and purchase some items from the nearby markets stalls and shops. When the coach finally arrived one member was missing hence two lots of search parties were hastily sent out to find the eluded member while certain other members temper began to strain due to precious minutes of 'ziyarah' time was taken up idly waiting for the absentee. Even the tour guide made a special announcement stressing on the importance of everyone staying together to avoid further unneccessary delays. It was amazing how quickly frustration and anxiety over-shadowed the previous feeling of spiritual elevation prevalent upon the group however Hadrat Shaykh al Islam remained quiet and undeterred by the general feeling of annoyance.

When the missing group member finally turned up he had the embarrassing task of walking up to the loaded coach and face the raging and staring eyes of his fellow travellers but most humiliating of all was for him to face Hadrat Shaykh al Islam. As he took to his seat naturally very remorseful and apologetic his words made the listeners hair stand up. Whilst wiping the perspiration from his face he said he was genuinely lost and looking for the group during the vast part of his absence. Then he uttered that he is not worthy to be in his Shaykhs eyes due to his good actions and now due to his unfortunate misdemeanor he is grateful to the Almighty that at least his Shaykhs attention was upon him though it may have been for the wrong reasons. The brother who only moments ago was the cause of anger and resentment amongst the fellow travellers had now won the hearts of those around him. His reason why he lost contact with the rest of the group was just as enthralling .........
